Bangalore – ‘The Silicon Valley of India’

The capital and largest city of the southern Indian state of Karnataka is Bengaluru, formerly known as Bangalore. With 8.4 million residents, the city was the most populated city in South India and the third most populated city overall, according to the 2011 census. With 10.5 million residents, the Bengaluru metropolitan area was the fourth most populated urban agglomeration in the nation. At 900 meters above sea level, it is situated in the middle of the Deccan Plateau. Because of its parks and green spaces, the city is called the “Garden City” in India.

It is commonly recognized as the “Silicon Valley of India” and the nation’s largest IT powerhouse. The city accounts for over one-third of India’s total IT exports, with an expected $64 billion in exports from the city in 2024. Electronic City, International Tech Park, Software Technology Park, Bagmane Tech Park, Global Village Tech Park, World Trade Center, and Manyata Embassy company parks are some of the company clusters and special economic zones that comprise the city’s IT sector.

The Bangalore Water Supplies and Sewerage Board (BWSSB), founded in 1964, is responsible for providing water supplies. Rainfall supplies the city with 800 million gallons of water each day on average. To store rainwater, Kempe Gowda built lakes like the Kempambudhi Kere in the sixteenth century. In 2021, the city utilized 2100 million liters of water per day, of which 1,450 million liters came from the company. The city’s water supply was previously provided by the Arkavathy River, but in 1964 the Cauvery water distribution network was established in response to growing demand. In 1974, the Kaver provided the majority of the city’s water supply; by 2014, that amount had increased to 1,450 million liters per day.

The nodal entity in charge of the city’s planning and development is the Bangalore Development Authority (BDA), which was founded in 1976. To plan and carry out municipal and infrastructure projects in the city, the BBMP collaborates with the BDA and the Agenda for Bangalore’s Infrastructure and Development Task Force (ABIDe). In responsibility for metropolitan planning is the Bangalore Metropolitan Region Development Authority, which was founded in 1985. The state executive and legislative offices are located in Vidhana Soudha, state ministries are located in Vikasa Soudha, and the governor’s palace is located at Raj Bhavan, the capital of Karnataka.
